(Book 1) for piano during the trip.

Travels to Sweet Briar, Virginia where he spends time as a fellow of
the Virginia Center for the Creative
Arts. Completes Persist
for cello octet.

Travels to St. Mary’s City, Maryland where he is artist in
residence at the St. Mary’s
College of Maryland Artist House. During the stay he creates an
arrangement for string
quartet of his Introduction
and Scherzo for violin

for Piano & Chamber Orchestra.

Travels to Minneapolis, MN and participates in the Minnesota Orchestra
Composer Institute of 2006. The Minnesota Orchestra conducted by Osmo
Vänskä premieres Byrnes' orchestral work Solace
on December 1.

Travels to The Netherlands and attends the premiere of his Villanelle
for violin and harp. The work is performed by Tjeerd Top and Lavinia
Meijer at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.

Travels to New York City and attends Dutch Harpist Lavinia Meijer's
'distinctive debut'
concert at Carnegie Hall
where she performs Byrnes' Visions
in Twilight.

Vacations in New Orleans and composes portions of Voodoo Stomp,
one of four works influenced by rock music, written for the
Cleveland Chamber Collective.

Travels to France and attends the premiere and subsequent
performances of La
Chapelle d'Aiguilhe: Concerto for Cello & Orchestra
in Angers and Nantes.
The work is performed by cellist Xavier
Phillips
and the Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire conducted by Sascha
Goetzel.

Travels to Cleveland to attend the premiere of four chamber works by
the Cleveland Chamber Collective: Manic
Aggressive, Schadenfreude, Zephyr & Voodoo Stomp.
On a side trip Garrett watches the
New Jersey Devils defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins at Mellon Arena on the
Pens opening day. Go Devils!

Travels to France and vacations in Paris and Orléans.
Attends the Europen premieres of Abstra
for piano and tape performed by Turkish pianist Toros Can on the 'Music
from the Americas' concert series presented by the Concours International de Piano
d'Orléans.

Travels to New York City and attends the world premiere of Devil in
Moscow for viola and harpsichord by the Allemagnetti Duo
at Carnegie Hall's Weill Hall.

July & August, 2009
Travels to Greece and spends a week sailing in the Greek Cyclades,
visiting the islands of Kythnos, Serifos and Sifnos and Cape
Souinon, the southernmost tip of mainland Greece. Also spends a week on
the Greek mainland in Athens, Monemvasía, and Nafplio stopping
at sites
such as Ancient Corinth, Sparta, and Mycenae along the way.
Composes the very brief work Monemvasía
Pebbles:
four miniatures for flute solo in and around
Monemvasía on the Peloponnese peninsula.

Travels to Turkey and attends the memorial concert for
his friend, the late harpist Ceren Necipoǧlu at the Cemal Reşit Rey
Concert Hall in Istanbul. Byrnes' works Visions in Twilight and Amhrán Slán,
both written specially for Necipoǧlu, are performed as part of the
program. The concert coincides
with the release of a commemorative 2 CD set on the Kalan record
label. Both works are included on the CD. |

Travels to Turkey and attends the memorial concert for Ceren Necipoǧlu
at the Anadolu University School of Music in Eşkişehir where she
taught. Meditation, for harp & string orchestra is
premiered in her memory by harpist Ece Yavaş and the Anadolu Symphony
String Orchestra conducted by Burak Tüzün. |
